Correction for companies

What to do when ChatGPT gives wrong information about my company?

Wrong or outdated details in ChatGPT answers are corrected through the sources ChatGPT answers from, not in ChatGPT itself. Old product data and an outdated positioning come from pages, directories and media nobody has updated. seraif, the AI search agency of Moritz Serif, shows you in the free AI Recommendation Check whether ChatGPT can even read your company data unambiguously.

01Causes

Why does ChatGPT name outdated products and an old positioning?

Because ChatGPT describes a company the way it appears in the sources it has read. Without web search it answers from its training data, with web search from the pages it fetches live, and in both cases the description that appears most often wins.

A repositioning usually only appears on the homepage. The old positioning, by contrast, sits in directory entries, press releases, trade articles and on subpages that were never deleted.

When customers ask ChatGPT about your company, they get to read that majority. That is embarrassing in front of customers, and for regulated providers it can raise approval and liability questions.

Four places where the old description lives

  1. Your own website. Old product pages, press releases and an about text from before the repositioning
  2. Directories and profiles. Entries from the founding years with the old description and old offer
  3. Trade media and portals. Articles and provider lists describing the former business model
  4. Training data. Answers without web search draw on knowledge that can be months old

How do you correct the description in ChatGPT?

In four steps, all of which start at the sources. First, what ChatGPT says today and where it gets it from is recorded; then your own pages, the profiles and the third-party sources are brought up to date.

01 · Baseline

What does ChatGPT say, and where from?

A fixed set of questions about your company, your offer and your competitors, asked several times. What is recorded is the statements and the linked sources, because that is where the description ChatGPT adopts comes from.

02 · Your own pages

Build the website as the reference

About page, grounding page and structured data describe the company as it is today. Old product pages are deleted or redirected so that your own website tells only one version.

03 · Profiles

Unify directories and listings

Industry directories, company profiles, review portals and knowledge bases get the same description as the website. Contradictions between the listings are the most common reason for wrong details.

04 · Third-party sources

Update trade media and portals

New trade articles, updated provider lists and digital PR bring the current positioning into the sources ChatGPT cites when asked for providers. Only then does the new description outvote the old one.

03Reputation

What to do when criticism from Reddit or reviews ends up in AI answers?

Build a counterweight, because a community discussion cannot be deleted. When asked about experiences with a provider, AI assistants draw on forums, review portals and trade articles, and whoever appears there only with criticism gets summarised that way.

For financial companies and other providers that depend on trust, sentiment is therefore part of the measurement. seraif records how ChatGPT talks about a company, which sources set the tone, and where your own answers, current customer testimonials and trade articles can complete the picture.

Three levers

  1. Answer yourself. Factual statements in the discussions ChatGPT cites
  2. Current customer testimonials. Reviews and references that describe today's offer
  3. Professional visibility. Articles in trade media that show the company as an expert source

09FAQ

Frequently asked questions about correction in ChatGPT

No, ChatGPT has no editorial desk that takes in and changes company details. The description arises from the sources ChatGPT reads, and that is exactly where the correction starts: on your website, in directories and in trade media. A change in the sources arrives in the answers as soon as ChatGPT fetches the pages again.

You check that with three questions to ChatGPT. Ask about your company name, about your offer without a name, such as “which providers are there for X”, and for a comparison with a competitor. Repeat each question a few times and note which sources ChatGPT links, because that is where the description ChatGPT adopts comes from.

The old products are still in sources ChatGPT reads. Typical places are your own subpages that were never deleted, old press releases, directory entries from the founding years and trade articles from years ago. Without web search, ChatGPT also answers from its training data, which can be months old.

The website is the first step, but it is rarely enough on its own. ChatGPT backs up provider questions mostly with third-party sources, and if directories, portals and trade media carry the old positioning, they outvote your own page. That is why profiles, listings and media contacts are part of the correction.

Yes, community discussions and reviews are among the sources AI assistants draw on when asked about experiences with a provider. That cannot be deleted. What works is a counterweight: your own answers in the discussions, current customer testimonials and trade articles that complete the picture.

That depends on how quickly ChatGPT fetches the changed sources again, and that cannot be guaranteed. Changes on your own website and in directories can be read by ChatGPT on the next fetch; new trade articles first have to appear and be cited. seraif measures progress monthly against a fixed set of customer questions.
